- Lots of inaccurate and misleading information here, if you ask me, regarding the financial situation in Ross Local Schools. We can probably debate how a district can possibly cut $1.3 million from their budget and still be facing red ink. But the characterization provided of how state fiscal oversight works in such districts is just flat out fearmongering. As you will recall, however, similar fearmongering over state academic oversight induced a number of districts to move heaven and earth to boost student achievement and avoid ADCs back in the day when that was an actual thing. So I guess we’ll just have to go with this “creative phrasing” and hope it helps. (WCPO-TV, Cincinnati, 3/15/22)
- In case you hadn’t heard, former Youngstown City Schools CEO Krish Mohip is one of three finalists for the superintendency of Philadelphia City Schools. The public portion of his interview process was covered by the Philadelphia Inquirer yesterday. If you’re still interested in creative phraseology after the previous clip, you should have a good time reading how Mohip characterizes his time in Youngstown, especially if you actually lived through it like I did. (Philadelphia Inquirer, 3/15/22)
- No obfuscation here, thank heavens. Canton City School officials report that not only have they not yet beaten the previously-nonexistent-but-now-actually-very-clearly-extant Covid slide, it is still ongoing. The district’s director of teaching and learning innovation provides data showing a two-year skills gap among many of their students. Solution options seem pretty thin. (Canton Repository, 3/15/22) Most Clark and Champaign County school districts are still seeing high levels of chronic absenteeism as well, a problem also noted in the Canton story. While the finger is pointed at remote learning during the pandemic, some of those 2019 numbers don’t look so hot either. Just sayin’. (Springfield News-Sun, 3/16/22)
