One more graduation story
High school graduation ceremonies have concluded in Ohio and the next phase of our young people’s lives has begun. But we have time for one more great story. Emily Galchick won a regional award for academic growth and was lauded by her alma mater, Utica Shale Academy, and state education officials recently. She chose USA for its integration of career tech and academics, even though she wasn’t sure of her direction in life. She ended up studying as an electrician to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps and found a niche even more perfect than she expected. Emily was recruited and hired by a local dairy for a great job, which she started immediately upon getting her diploma. Awesome!
Summer
A hot Ohio summer is upon us, and here’s a look at one option for young central Ohioans to get a great day camp experience close to home. Community Youth Camp is athletics-focused and sponsored by the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. It includes both indoor and outdoor activities for children ages 6 through 12 and aims to introduce them to the basics of sports both familiar and new to them. The first week of camp has just concluded but the second week—with spots and scholarship still available—begins Tuesday at the awesome campus of KIPP Columbus. The view from Cleveland
We have been following the ongoing work of charter school supporters to turn back proposed federal rules which would make applying for and winning Charter School Program (CSP) grants much harder than in the past. In the latest effort, Cleveland’s new leader Justin Bibb was among a bipartisan group of mayors from across the country who recently signed a letter “stridently opposing” the rules as proposed and asking Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to rescind them.
Return to office
The state board of education this week voted unanimously to reappoint former Interim State Superintendent Stephanie Siddens to the position following the abrupt departure of Steve Dackin. A new search for a permanent incumbent will likely begin soon.
Legislation update
Ohio House Bill 583, which became the vehicle for a plethora of education-related provisions, is headed to Governor DeWine’s desk after approval in the General Assembly. This coverage from the Dayton Daily News looks at important changes coming to charter sponsor evaluations and the EdChoice Scholarship program.
