Slowly, slowly, I work my way through the latest issue of Washington Monthly, in which America's colleges and universities are ranked. The Washington Monthly rankings are odd, though, because they are based significantly upon estimations of how schools profit their country and communities and not how they could profit prospective students (see the magazine's methodological explanation for details). Difficult to see why an ambitious and talented 18-year-old would care, for instance, how many of a given university's alumni?are serving?in the Peace Corps.
