CHEERS

A federal judge ordered Texas to process Islamic school applications and to extend the application window for families for its $1 billion school choice program. No Islamic schools made it onto the state’s approved list, despite hundreds of Christian schools being accepted. “The appearance of this reeks,” said U.S. District Judge Alfred Bennett. And as Neal McCluskey put it, “Excluding Islamic schools defeats the purpose of school choice.” —Naaz Modan, K–12 Dive

JEERS

In an op-ed for Fox News, Corey DeAngelis urges Tennessee lawmakers to go further than their proposed immigration status verification bill and bar undocumented children from public school entirely. Anticipating the inevitable legal challenges, he says that “a victory for Tennessee could dismantle Plyler [v. Doe] nationwide, inspiring a cascade of similar reforms,” as if keeping kids out of school will solve both school funding challenges and the nation’s immigration woes. —Fox News
