On Friday, Peter passed on his thoughts about school food programs. And on Thursday, the Senate passed a reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act called the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, a $4.5 billion bit of legislation which would, inter alia, increase the reimbursement rate?the amount that the federal government pays school districts for each free lunch they serve?by six cents (it is currently $2.68). There has been no congressionally mandated reimbursement-rate raise since 1973.
School food is mostly rotten, occasionally literally so. Congress's recent work notwithstanding, the brightest efforts to improve K-12 fare have occurred and are occurring locally. More on this impending.
