Cheers

  • More high school seniors are saving themselves time and money by choosing apprenticeships over college. —Wall Street Journal
  • Three superintendents are leading the charge in removing cueing-based reading curricula from schools. —K–12 Dive
  • The late Marion Joseph was a tireless advocate for phonics-based reading instruction in California. Her long struggle is paying off in Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed 2022–23 budget, which includes a $1 million appropriation for the creation of a “Literacy Roadmap.” —Cal Matters

Jeers

  • The new season of ABC’s hit show Abbott Elementary trots out clichés and outright falsehoods about charter schools, earning high praise from prestige media (read this for a thoughtful rebuttal). —New Yorker
  • Understaffed schools are experimenting with four-day weeks to attract more teachers, but the loss of instructional time will hurt students. —Washington Post
  • One writer claims that education commentary is too optimistic and that a half-century of research has “utterly failed” to close achievement gaps (Andrew Rotherham thinks he overstates the case, though). —Freddie deBoer
  • Classes are canceled for 422,000 students as support workers in the Los Angeles Unified School district go on strike. —New York Times
