Message from space
Dayton businessman Larry Connor is part of the first crew of private citizens to journey to the International Space Station. Earlier this week, he spoke with students from Dayton Early College Academy live from orbit. Amazing!
Clarification requested
Ohio’s dropout prevention and recovery schools remain concerned about the structure of the new gap closing measure to be introduced in the next state report cards. Currently, the state board of education is addressing those concerns, but resolution still seems some ways out.
Proposed changes to CSP will hurt Ohio charters
The Thomas B. Fordham Institute this week published an analysis of how the Biden Administration’s proposed changes to the federal Charter School Program (CSP) would affect Ohio charters. The news, as expected, is not good.
The view from Kentucky
Kentucky legislators overrode several vetoes issued by Governor Andy Beshear this week, including House Bill 9, which may at last open the door to charter schools in the Bluegrass State. While legal since 2017, no charters have yet opened due to a lack of state funding support. HB 9, when enacted, will require school districts to share funding with charter established in their borders. However, a lawsuit to stop implementation of the legislation is likely between now and then.
The view from NOLA
Here’s a great profile of a charter high school in New Orleans that wants to prepare its students for financial freedom as part of its curriculum. The Rooted School includes regular courses in areas like coding and graphic design along with the usual reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic. “We want kids to cross the graduation stage with a job offer in one hand and a college acceptance letter in the other,” the head of school told news outlet Nola.com earlier this week. Nice!
