Looking back on 2019
The high profile effort of some Democrats to “back away” from charter school support made the New York Times’ list of big education trends they saw in 2019. A little downbeat to start the new year.
A more positive take
The National Alliance of Public Charter Schools naturally has a more upbeat assessment of 2019 in terms of legislative highlights across the country. However, they are not shy about pointing out the negatives as well.
Getting down to specifics
In a surprise to no one, the board of Newport Independent Schools in Kentucky, voted to deny the application of what would be the state’s first charter school. There is still some time for the charter’s founders to mount an appeal but no indication yet as to whether they will do so.
Ohio research on funding
The Ohio Department of Education recently released a study of online school funding models as required by HB 166. The report examines the various funding models for online education used around the country with an emphasis on those that incorporate some aspect of completion or competency. This is definitely worth a read.
