Even more to be thankful for
Following on from last week’s Thanksgiving edition, here is a look at a great project from the students at Youthbuild Columbus: building and continually stocking Blessing Boxes to provide food, clothing, hygiene products, and more for people in need. Lovely.
Good news for charter school students in Dayton
The Dayton Daily News shared the good tidings that most of the sponsors of charters in the Dayton area received solid ratings from ODE. Kudos to all, especially the three organizations earning the highest rating of “exemplary.”
Transportation troubles continue in Columbus
Kudos to WSYX-TV for staying on the case of continued transportation troubles for charter school families in Columbus. It seems that the ongoing coverage has at last attracted the attention of the Columbus City School Board.
The view from the (editorial) board room
The Columbus Dispatch’s editorial board recently opined on the topic of online schooling, echoing a previous news story which was highly complimentary toward e-school teachers. The editorial board noted that some specialized skills were needed for such a non-traditional teaching environment and urged teacher prep programs to boost the quantity and quality of their offerings in that regard.
The national pundit’s view
Charter schools continue to make headlines in the 2020 presidential primary race. Dr. James V. Shuls, an assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, recently published an opinion piece on the blog of The 74 Million where he discussed the ideological disconnect between candidates opposing charters and families who have chosen them for their children.
