- Our own Chad Aldis was a guest on the weekly Statehouse News Bureau chat show “State of Ohio” this past weekend. He was joined by Innovation Ohio’s Steve Dyer to talk about the new Know Your Charter report on the history of federal Charter School Program (CSP) funds in Ohio. - Aaron Churchill spoke to Cincinnati journalist Mike Brown about charter schools recently. Aaron’s quotes and several other Fordham historical references constitute a small part of this epic blog post (nearly 3500 words) that tries to tie the case study of one recently-closed area charter school with the entire history of charter schools in Ohio. - Chad is quoted extensively on the adoption by the Capacity Committee of the state board of a set of changes to charter school rules. It’s a curious collection of changes, some of which seem legit and some of which lead to head scratching. In the latter category is a rule that requires charters school to report to ODE whenever critical media reports about them are published. Oddly, ODE runs a daily news clip service that should theoretically encompass all the outlets in which charter school stories of any stripe could appear. Between that service and this one (toot toot!) I’m not sure what they think they are missing. Weird. (Gongwer Ohio, 6/3/16)
- “What a story — three years ago Dayton Leadership Academies was on the brink of closure by the State of Ohio and now we are a school on the rise.” So says DLA’s executive director T.J. Wallace as the DDN recognized the charter school for its Momentum Award for strong student growth. As their sponsor, we here at Fordham couldn’t agree more. - Going back to the Know Your Charter report for a moment, here’s an editorial from the Vindy reacting to that report and discussing U.S. Rep Tim Ryan’s response. - Elsewhere in Youngstown, the new Academic Distress Commission narrowed their CEO candidate list to two finalists just before Memorial Day. Here is a profile of those two folks. (Youngstown Vindicator, 5/30/16) Just after Memorial Day, the ADC chose Chicagoan Krish Mohip for the position. This weekend, editors in Youngstown opined favorably on the final choice. - We’ll conclude today’s catch-up with a trio of updates on the Win-Win agreement in central Ohio. First up, a helpful Q&A about its creation, purpose, and history. Ah the 80’s. (Columbus Dispatch, 5/30/16) Two weeks ago, we told you that Groveport-Madison Schools had successfully negotiated a fee reduction with Columbus Schools as well as a timeline for departure from the agreement. While I was out, Dublin Schools concluded a similar negotiation that involved a land swap. (Columbus Dispatch, 5/27/16) But, in the end, most districts involved in Win-Win renewed the agreement as-is for another six years. (Columbus Dispatch, 6/1/16)
