Digging into charter school ratings across the state
Results from 2018–19 state report cards offer more encouraging signs that Ohio’s charter sector is righting itself in the wake of reform. Fordham’s Aaron Churchill provides a great first look at the data in depth. More will follow.
The view from Clark County…
Unfortunately, the report card results for Clark County’s two charter schools were disappointing. One school dropped from a C to a D overall while the other remained steady with an overall F. The school leader interviewed in the Springfield News-Sun offered concrete strategies to be addressed immediately based on the overall report card and its component ratings.
…and in Mahoning and Trumbull counties
Report card results were mixed in the Youngstown area. Kudos to Horizon Science Academy for its overall B grade.

Horizon Science Academy in Lorain missed an overall B by just .2 points. School leaders gave credit to their teachers for their dedicated and continuing work to do the very best for their students.
Edison Learning
Four dropout recovery schools in Chicago run by Edison Learning were shut down in recent months, ending that provider’s presence in Illinois. “Displacing children is not in their best interest,” said Chicago’s schools chief Janice Jackson. “In this case, the district has acted on a provider who failed to provide a quality education for our children.” Two similar schools remaining in Edison’s portfolio are in Ohio.
