New school year stories—good

The good folks at Sheffield Academy received some more glowing praise in the media this week, once again focusing on its great summer programming, even before the school opened its doors for the first time. Meanwhile, River Gate High School held a successful book bag giveaway and community fair in its hometown of Warren.

New school year story—not so good

The school year started on Tuesday for schools and districts across the greater Dayton area. Unfortunately, and predictably, student transportation was described as “chaos”, with charter school students and families heavily impacted.

The nation must eliminate barriers to school choice

Ian Rowe, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, penned an editorial in the Washington Examiner’s blog this week where he makes the argument that the only proper response to the nationwide upsurge in parental interest in school choice is to eliminate all systemic barriers to wider choice. To provide a quality education to all students at a reasonable cost, we need choice, competition and the accountability they engender.

Ohio must eliminate barriers to school choice too

The Fordham Institute this week released a policy brief focusing on ways to boost school choice in the Buckeye State. Among the recommendations for growing the charter sector are making the quality community school support fund permanent and increasing the dollars available for it, including charters in the “targeted assistance” formula, and creating a credit-enhancement program to make school construction and renovation more affordable. You can read the full brief here.

Looking ahead to next year

Two classical education schools are slated to open in the Columbus area in fall 2023, including the Heart of Ohio Classical Academy charter school. While the Dispatch’s coverage of the plan is not entirely flattering, the schools’ founders do speak clearly of the reasons they were motivated to open schools of choice.
