Lawsuit filed

The Thomas B. Fordham Institute is one of the plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed against the U.S. Department of Education earlier this week. The suit challenges the legality of new federal regulations that would serve to significantly restrict access to Charter School Grant (CSP) funds.

In other national news

Fourteen percent of the top 50 high schools in the United States this year, as ranked by U.S. News and World Reports annually, are charter schools. Magnets and other schools of choice also fill numerous slots.

Celebration in Toledo

The upcoming tenth anniversary of the founding of the Ann Jerkins-Harris Academy of Educational Excellence, a charter school in Toledo, is cause for celebration. The school is lauded for its small class sizes, wraparound services, and focus on developing individual leadership skills in its students.

New year, great new option

Here’s a fantastic profile of Sheffield Academy, a charter school opening its doors in Lorain County for the first time this school year. The enthusiastic coverage includes information on the joint focus on academics and athletics as well as information on a summer sports camp run by the school and open to all interested young people. Kudos to all.

Afterschool Child Enrichment

As the new school year begins here in Ohio, the Canton Repository reminds parents of the state’s new Afterschool Child Enrichment (ACE) program, which provides up to $500 per child for families with incomes at or below 300 percent of the federal poverty line to use toward afterschool (and summer) activities such as music lessons, tutoring help, and art classes. The ACE program is open to all eligible families, regardless of school attended, and applies to children ages 6 to 18. More information can be found in the Rep article or from the ACE Ohio website here.
