Outgoing
The Toledo Blade has a nice profile of Doug Mead, the outgoing director of Toledo School for the Arts. While his tenure has had some ups and downs, the charter’s public profile has never been higher and the regard in which it is held has never been more positive. Kudos, and best wishes for the future.
Conquering
Ohio Connections Academy student Bella Hustic spent a number of years being bullied and coming to hate school. The pandemic pivot to remote learning led her to OCA, and after two years she is happier and healthier than ever before. She has written and published a book of poetry intended to not only help herself heal but also to reach out to other young people similarly suffering. Beautiful.
Supporting
The executive director of Pennsylvania’s Public Cyber Charter School Association published an op-ed in The Morning Call of Allentown, rebutting a previously-published attack and supporting online charters and the important services they provide to students and the state.
Legislating
Ohio House Bill 583 passed in the Senate this week after a raft of amendments were added in committee. Among those amendments is a change in the sponsor evaluation system which would allow a sponsor to receive an “effective” rating even if it receives zero points—completely fails—one of the three components of the evaluation system. Practically speaking, sponsors would no longer be accountable for the academic performance of the schools they oversee.
