Celebrating 25 years
The Yale Daily News published a great feature on Common Ground Charter High School in New Haven, Connecticut, an environmental science-focused school which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Huge congratulations!
Charters in the early pandemic
New research was released this week looking at the responses of charter schools to the challenges of serving students in the early months of the pandemic. The report from the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO), confirms previous analyses showing that the charter sector generally prioritized student engagement and instruction, with many schools making a quick transition to online learning and embracing hybrid models as circumstances allowed. The organizational flexibility of charter schools is once again credited for this efficient and student-centric response. You can read more about the new report here.
Art competition for northeast Ohio high schoolers
Summit County’s Artspace organization is launching an art exhibition for students in the county. The Starburst Regional Juried High School Exhibition invites all Summit County high schools to showcase artwork by senior students. The Myers School of Art will also award one $500 scholarship to a Starburst participant who majors in art at the University of Akron for the 2022-23 school year. Each high school may enter up to five works to be juried. The application is free and open now—the deadline for submission is March 4. More information can be found here.
Rising Leaders
NAPCS is looking for 10 charter high school students from across the country to be part of its inaugural Rising Leaders class. The year-long program will provide leadership development and advocacy training for students who want to become active participants in education policy decisions in their local communities. The virtual program will be held monthly from September 2022 to June 2023. Participating students will be eligible for a $3,000 stipend and advocacy clubs will also receive operating funds. Nominate a Changemaker
NAPCS is also accepting nominations for its 2022 Changemaker Awards. They are looking to elevate diverse voices and celebrate individuals who are making a positive impact on public charter school education and in their communities. Nominees must be affiliated with a charter school (employee, alum, parent, etc.), but cannot be a current student, and have made a proven significant impact in their community. Ten individuals from across the country will be highlighted with an award. The deadline for nominations is February 25 and full information can be found here.
