A brief story from Axios’ new Ohio bureau this week lays out the data on public school enrollment changes in the Buckeye State as published recently by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. Charters registered an 11.1 percent increase in enrollment between the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years, while traditional school districts in the state registered a nearly four percent decline.

Here’s a look at the work of Franklinton Rising, a Columbus nonprofit working to rehab deteriorating houses on the west side of the city and give them a new lease on life. Among the young volunteers helping with the work and learning a raft of construction skills is charter school student Omar Rivas. Rivas says he is already fielding some attractive job offers even before he graduates from Franklinton High. Kudos!
Breakfast
In Cuyahoga County, the tradition of dads walking their kids to school and sharing breakfast with them continued this year. At Madison Community Elementary, leaders of the charter school call it “The Gentlemen Walk” to encourage other father figures to participate along with the dads.

Chiffon Rushford, chief tutoring corps officer at Great Oaks Legacy Charter School in Newark, New Jersey, provided her insight for a piece looking at new educational strategies born of—but successful enough to be utilized beyond—the pandemic. She is excited to see how remote learning platforms and the real-time data they provide on student achievement can be harnessed in a more traditional learning environment.

The Conversation featured an in-depth profile of long-time education reformer Howard Fuller this week, from his days as a burgeoning civil rights crusader at Case Western Reserve University to his time as superintendent at Milwaukee Public Schools to his voucher advocacy in support of Black student excellence and beyond. It is just a taste of his incredible life and work, more of which will be covered in the author’s forthcoming book on Fuller.
