- Aaron Churchill was front-and-center on the opinion page of the ABJ this weekend, talking in positive terms about the revolution in early literacy education coming to Ohio schools. (Akron Beacon Journal, 3/17/24)
- Unsurprisingly (to me at least), Washington Local Schools in suburban Toledo got a positive vote on their request for a special-use permit from a planning commission on a second attempt last week. As we previously noted, the district fell afoul of the committee at first, as so many charter schools in Ohio have also done, upon the typical complaints by citizens about parking and drainage issues the proposed new middle school would create. After a full-court press from high level City of Toledo and Lucas County officials—which, it seems from this coverage, includes multiple personal visits to the home of one persistent complainant—to allay their fears and to offer fixes for their issues, the commission voted unanimously to recommend approval of the permit. No charter school has ever had such support—just ask Horizon Toledo—and it seems unsurprising that the efforts made the difference. A vote of Toledo City Council will follow soon. Anyone care to predict the outcome of that one? (Toledo Blade, 3/14/27)
- Here’s a great look at the sixth annual Science Night event at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Youngstown. Over 40 third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders participated in the event (with a Mission: Impossible spy theme) with experiments and puzzles devised and led by honors science students from the high school. Sounds like a blast. (WKBN-TV, Youngstown, 3/24/24)
