- There’s only one story to clip today, but sometimes you only need one. I’ll give you three iterations of it here, though. I think you know why. The bottom line: A Franklin County magistrate on Friday allowed the temporary restraining order stopping the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to fully start up to expire. So, the DEW was officially uncapped at last. (NBC4i.com, Columbus, 10/20/23) The court case will still go on, of course, but the magistrate agreed with the state’s contention that too much chaos would result if the DEW/ODE dichotomy was allowed to sit unresolved any longer. The plaintiffs in the case remained undeterred following the ruling, saying in a statement from their lawyers, “We await a final decision on our request to block the law while the case proceeds, and we are confident that democracy and the Ohio constitution will ultimately prevail.” Bless them. (Columbus Dispatch, 10/20/23) “I am thrilled that the restraining order has been dissolved and we can focus on the important work of moving forward to help our kids be better prepared for life after high school,” said Governor Mike DeWine in his own statement following the ruling. “I have asked Jessica Voltolini to serve as the interim director of the Department of Education and Workforce beginning Monday,” he continued. “She will lead the department as we resume our search for the director and deputy director positions.” (Gongwer Ohio, 10/20/23)
