  1. The awesomeness of my colleague Jessica Poiner has gone international! Here she is talking with reporters from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation about the I Promise School and the important work of the LeBron James Family Foundation in their shared hometown of Akron. (Foreign Correspondent, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, 9/20/23)

  2. Need a little charter school awesomeness to end your week? Glad to oblige! Emerson Academy’s Ashley Bass was nominated as a Dayton Community Gem (see what they did there?) for her work as a Communities in Schools site coordinator at the school. “Sometimes kids need just a little one-on-one support” to be able to focus on school, she said. Nice! (Dayton Daily News, 9/20/23) Kudos to all the students who were chosen to participate on Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s Teen Ambassador Board this year. The high school juniors and seniors from across Ohio, including charter and homeschooled students (yay!), will get an up-close view of the state’s legal and government operations through discussions with government officials, interactive learning sessions, and many other activities. (Mahoning Matters, 9/20/23)

  3. In case you missed it, a Franklin County judge on Thursday issued a temporary restraining order halting all ongoing work to create the new Department of Education and Workforce. This in response to that lawsuit filed by seven members of the state board which we talked about on Wednesday. (10TV News, Columbus, 9/21/23) The arguments against the DEW are mainly of the procedural and “we’ve done it this way for decades” variety. Yawn. The arguments for the DEW, as put forward by Lt. Governor Jon Husted in this coverage, are mainly of the “state board hasn’t done anything to help students” variety. Check ‘em out. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 2, one day before the mandated start of the DEW. (News5, Cleveland, 9/21/23)
