- How’d the first day of actual school go in Youngstown this week? Or even the second? No one in the local press seems to care since the teachers union is happy with the deal they won, so I have no idea. Let’s just assume that whatever passes for school up there is now actually happening, and rejoice with everyone else that we can just move on to other stuff. The parents of Youngstown—they know. Funny enough, Youngstown City Schools were namedropped several times during an event we held at the Athletic Club of Columbus yesterday. Gongwer’s coverage of the event focuses on the big picture of test score data as presented, so the…let’s call them “unflattering”…references to Youngstown were not noted by them. (Gongwer Ohio, 9/19/23) Here is some in-depth coverage of the new data from The 74’s Patrick O’Donnell. Also nothing about Youngstown. Too bad. It's pretty interesting to me. (The 74, 9/19/23)
- Meanwhile, our very busy Aaron Churchill was also among the voices cheering on the impending demise of three-cueing as a reading instruction strategy in Indiana. (Chalkbeat Indiana, 9/19/23)
- And speaking of busy: Seven members of the state board of education took time out of their obviously jam-packed schedules to sue the state to stop the implementation of a new organization paradigm for education governance in the state. One which would see their body limited to a small scope of responsibilities in the very near future. They also spent quite a bit of valuable time chatting about the lawsuit yesterday, too, so obviously there’s lots of media coverage today. Hopefully one of our august news outlets will find out and report to us all where the money is coming from to pay the lawyer in charge of the suit. I’m sure that all enquiring minds want to know that, don’t they? I know I sure do. (Toledo Blade, 9/19/23)
