- A little history for you before we kick off today’s clips: Back on June 4, a lifetime ago by journalistic standards, an op-ed by our own Aaron Churchill was published in the print version of the Columbus Dispatch. Weirdly, it did not receive a proper online/electronic version at that time so I couldn’t even clip it for you. Fast forward to today where it finally appears, ten days later, with today’s date on it. Why wait so long? Because someone did actually see the printed piece besides me, and that someone was moved to write a rebuttal. Which was published properly. And, it seems, pretty quickly. Probably not a surprise considering the topic was charter school funding. (Columbus Dispatch, 6/14/23)
- A bit more straightforward, although also the teensiest bit tardy, is this piece looking at the Senate version of the state budget bill. Aaron is quoted in favor of school choice expansion plans from a press release distributed last week. By later this afternoon, there could be even more to say on both of the foregoing topics. - The school year is over, ushering in several new seasons at once. First up is Fight the Sumer Slide Season – exemplified by this awesome story about Mathnasium of Belden Village, which is offering individualized math tutoring services to eligible students from pre-K to pre-calculus, paid for through the state’s Afterschool Child Enrichment (ACE) program. (Canton Repository, 6/11/23) Next up is Double Dipper Season – as in the Woodridge Local Schools treasurer retiring with the full knowledge that he will be rehired as soon as the revolving door (clause) stops spinning. “Because the board has not taken any action on rehiring me as of yet,” he tells the ABJ, “there is no information on savings to provide to you as of yet.” Well said, you clearly vitally-important number cruncher, you. Well said. (Akron Beacon Journal, 6/12/23) And finally is Super Sad Season – as you can tell by the funereal tone of this lengthy elegy for the imminent departure of CMSD CEO Eric Gordon. Might also be Hyperbole Season, given all the “is the Cleveland Plan now dooooooooomed?” talk within the piece….without much support for the answer you are expected to land on. (Hechinger, 6/14/23)
