- Nothing much in the news today, so we’ll make this quick. Ohio Senate Bill 19 was heard in the House Education Committee this week. While it is nominally an effort to improve math achievement, it’s an amendment to do with literacy that’s now making news. To wit: The current version of the bill would exempt a small group of classical charter schools from the requirement to use high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) aligned to the science of reading, as currently required of all public schools in Ohio. Critics of the move are invoking Pandora’s Box (how many kids even get that reference these days?), but supporters note the exemption is temporary (just two years); specific to these schools only; and could be revisited any time by the legislature, the next governor, and/or the Department of Education and Workforce along the way.
