- The voucher lawsuit appeal hearing happened yesterday. You can check out remarkably-similar coverage from the Plain Dealer folks… (Cleveland.com, 5/12/26) …the Dispatch team… (Columbus Dispatch, 5/12/26) …or the DDN. (Dayton Daily News, 5/12/26)
- The similarity of which I speak in the preceding clip is a district-centric focus to the stories (as in, “the appeal of vouchers’ unconstitutionality took place today”), which was inevitable and would, I surmised, be universal across all coverage. What would it look like if an EdChoice lawsuit media story was told from the voucher perspective (as in “the state defends vouchers”)? Very much like this one, I think. Interesting. (Scioto Post, 5/12/26)
- Speaking of playing defense, leaders of Cleveland Metropolitan School District took to the stage of the City Club yesterday to defend their work in right-sizing the cash-strapped district—including building closures/consolidations, programming cuts, and staff layoffs. Despite efforts by audience members and the media to link today’s school choice environment (see above) and the current state funding formula to the problem, these leaders are refreshingly clear-eyed. They present a history lesson confirming decades of student enrollment loss beginning long before charters and the Cleveland Scholarship Program came around in the 1990s. Unspoken here—but implied is the fact that CMSD did very little to shrink their footprint until now, despite the longstanding need. District CEO Warren Morgan said that there remain more than 250 schools in the Cleveland area, which is “too many schools for our area.” I think the defense can rest now. (Ideastream Public Media, 5/12/26)
