Gadfly Bites 5/12/25—Talking—and not talking—about vouchers

  1. Paul Peterson, who himself knows a thing or two about voucher program research, interviews David Figlio, a co-author on the latest Urban Institute report on Ohio’s EdChoice Scholarship Program on EdNext’s podcast. They dig into the data, the methodology, and the findings of highly-positive impacts on postsecondary success for voucher students. (Education Exchange podcast, 5/12/25)

  2. There is, unfortunately, no actual talk of vouchers in this piece—discussing how a Columbus school serving students on the autism spectrum is losing out on a federal earmark thanks to a revised Congressional spending plan—which is too bad because vouchers likely matter as much or more to the operations of Bridgeway Academy. I assume talking about the Ohio Autism Scholarship and the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship would have gotten in the way of the intended point of the piece, but I also assume that voucher availability (and many district schools’ inability to serve these students to the extent that parents want for their kids, which does come up in the piece) is the main reason for Bridgeway’s big waiting list in the first place. But reality often gets in the way of a good story around here. (Columbus Dispatch, 5/11/25)
