Gadfly Bites 4/4/22—Grab bag

  1. In case you missed it last week during your April Fool’s revelry, the state board of education narrowed the list of candidates for state superintendent to seven finalists. Interviews will be conducted next week. And if you have a moment, do take a look at the extraordinary image used by Spectrum News to illustrate this story. Anyone else getting strong Mr. T vibes from that dude? (Spectrum News 1, 4/1/22)

  2. Construction is underway for the Greater Dayton School, with all the accoutrements you expect from a high end, non-sectarian private school (you know which ones I’m talking about). As we have noted here before as the plan has evolved, the big difference will be a tuition fee of zero dollars for the low-income families to which it is targeted. EdChoice Scholarships will pay part of the cost, with philanthropy taking up the considerable remainder. Even though the amazing-looking new building will not be ready, 100 students in pre-K to grade three will start this fall in a temporary location. Best wishes to everyone in this fantastic-sounding effort. (Dayton Daily News, 4/3/22)

  3. Some pretty big promises coming from the head honcho of Math Corps, the summer camp for middle schoolers offered by the University of Toledo. “Test scores typically increase in just a few weeks from pre-test averages of 30 percent to post-test averages of 90 percent,” she said. Plus, the academic gains are sustained over time. Middle school participants were 11 percent more likely to enroll in college.” Oh snap! The application window is open right now and the line forms behind me! (Toledo Blade, 4/3/22)
