- I imagine we’ve all seen that episode of Law & Order: you know, the one where fingerprint evidence solves the case at the last minute as the ominous strings build up in the background. But what if the fingerprints themselves are missing? Looks like that’s the situation Ohio finds itself in, as it was revealed this week that the fingerprints of 4,700 licensed educators which should be in the system, are not. Duh DUH. - Good news: the brand spankin’ new Lorain Alumni Association looks like it’s going to come together. Better news: it looks like it is intended to include public and private (well, Catholic) high school graduates. Best news: it looks like the new group can raise a crap ton of money in a less-than-affluent part of the state. The other shoe: first order of business is a schmancy new stadium to go with the schmancy new (district) high school. Great for fiddling in, I reckon. (Northern Ohio Morning Journal, 4/27/17)
- Speaking of Catholic schools, here is a profile of tiny but mighty Mater Dei school in suburban Whitehall. For the past 46 years, teachers and staff have been diligent in their approach to a classical Catholic education model for their students. There is a prominent mention – and staunch rejection of – private school vouchers (“The school tries to be as little beholden to government as possible”) for the leaders of this 19-student school. - Fifth and sixth graders from across Youngstown had a chance to experience Cardinal Mooney High School at a fun-sounding open house this week. The goal was to give them a taste of school culture and hopefully some of them will choose Mooney when the time comes. There is no mention in this piece of vouchers one way or another. So, just to add some value to these clips (“Why start now?” I hear you snark), I can report that Mooney has no problem accepting voucher-eligible students from all relevant Ohio scholarship programs. - Finally, an update on the four young men – quadruplets – from Lakota East High School who were all accepted into all Ivy League colleges. The first of the brothers has made his pick – it’s Yale for him. I’m sure we’ll hear about his brothers’ choices shortly. (Dayton Daily News, 4/28/17)
