Gadfly Bites 3/14/22—Debunked but still in use

  1. Trust me, none of these elected school board members in Berea are any better informed about school choice than they were before the mixed up presentation they received, as summarized here. It seems entirely fitting, then, that the “reach out to your legislators to express your opinion” exhortation is noted before the recommendation to “educate yourselves”. Fordham, however, stands ready to assist with that last bit if anyone’s interested in the actual information. (Cleveland.com, 3/11/22)

  2. The great news: Centerburg Local Schools is in the process of scrapping the “discredited” three-cueing system of teaching kids how to tread in place of good old phonics/decoding. The improvement has, apparently, been immediate. The bad news: literally everything else in this piece—from how long cueing has been used, to how reluctant some teachers are to scrap it, to the notion that its suckitude was not detected because “most kids did OK” with it, to the fact that it is still going to take at least another year to complete the vital change. (Ashland Source, 3/10/22)
