- While Governor DeWine’s budget priorities included billions (billions I say!) to support a huge range of K-12 education priorities, lotsa folks out here in punditland only want to talk about proposed EdChoice Scholarship Program expansions. We’ll start with the good: Our own Aaron Churchill is among those quoted (along with two Fordham-issued reports) in this detailed coverage of plans in both the Senate and the state budget to boost eligibility for vouchers. (Dayton Daily News, 2/2/23) Waaaaaay on the other side of the ledger, it’s too bad there was no room for quotes from any voucher supporters in this coverage from the OCJ. Supporters who were not named Mike DeWine, that is. (Ohio Capital Journal, 2/2/23) While the headline of this piece is not exactly news, at least the voice of Lt. Gov. Jon Husted is heard on the matter of voucher expansion. (WTOV-TV, Steubenville, 2/2/23)
- While the EdChoice Scholarship Program is not mentioned in this piece highlighting National Catholic Schools Week celebrations in Toledo, it’s a sure bet that lots and lots of the 15,000 Catholic school students in northwest Ohio are able to have the education option they want because of the availability of vouchers. - It is estimated that at least 60,000 Cleveland residents have completed some college coursework but not finished their degree. And while this plan by Cleveland City Council to allocate $300,000 in federal pandemic relief funds to help support those folks to get those final credits and earn that sheepskin is laudable, my rudimentary math suggests that councilmembers are hoping not everyone on that list hits them up for help.
