Gadfly Bites 2/1/21 – Indispensable

Gadfly Bites
  1. We’ll lead with the big stuff. Editors in Columbus opined strongly in favor of conducting state testing in schools this spring. It is, they reckon, “an indispensable tool” for not only combatting Covid-influenced learning loss but also the compounding effects of all the drags on student achievement which predate the arrival of SARS-CoV-2. (Columbus Dispatch, 1/31/21

  2. Speaking of the ‘rona: The Cincinnati Federation of Teachers spent this past weekend suing the city school district to stop the in-person portion of the new hybrid learning model from starting today. (Cincinnati Enquirer, 1/30/21)

  3. Meanwhile, Breakthrough Schools in Cleveland held their annual “paddle raise” fundraiser over the weekend. Instead of going back to the charter network for expansion plans, this year all proceeds will go to directly to Breakthrough teachers and front line staff as bonuses in appreciation for their hard work and dedication during the Covid crisis. (WKYC-TV, Cleveland, 1/31/21)

Nice! (Dayton Daily News, 2/1/21)

  5. The ‘rona can’t stop Ohio’s biennial state budget rodeo. Mike DeWine’s second budget as governor will be revealed this afternoon, including many education priorities. (Columbus Dispatch, 2/1/21)
