  1. The first sitting elected member of the state board of education has announced she will be running for another elective office—State Senate—next fall. Thank you for your service, and good luck in the trenches. (Dayton Daily News, 11/20/23) Meanwhile, the first public meeting of the new Department of Education and Workforce was held yesterday at DEW HQ (The DEWcave? Fortress of SoliDEWed?). Such meetings are required at least every other month by law, don’t you know. It sounded calm, cool, collected, and entirely businesslike. How refreshing. Two administrative rule packages were discussed and we learned that Director-nominate Steve Dackin would likely have his confirmation hearing in the Senate in early December. (Gongwer Ohio, 11/21/23)

  2. “It’s an event that’s only expected to last for a couple of hours so why are we taking away from the education?” asked Fairview Park City Schools superintendent Keith Ahearn, explaining his district’s recent change of schedule on the day of the upcoming solar eclipse this April. Good freakin’ question, boss, seeing as how it’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment for real time science education dropped right on your doorstep. Answer? The timing of the thing, right during scheduled dismissal, seems a skosh dangerous to him. He has been convinced by those fears to close the entire district for the entire day, extending spring break. “What I’ve learned is what an event solar eclipses are,” he added. Did you, man? Did you? (Cleveland.com, 11/22/23)

  3. Finally this week, and to end on a more positive note: Driver’s ed classes for Haitian Creole speakers in Springfield—teens and adults alike—conducted by native speakers of the language? Wi tanpri! (Springfield News-Sun, 11/21/23)
