Jennifer was the recipient of the Ohio Alliance for Public Charter School?s annual teacher of the year award, a distinction given to just one teacher in Ohio for significant contributions when it comes to advancing student achievement
The number of districts rated excellent in Ohio has risen dramatically over the past several years, from 85 in the 2002-2003 school year to 352 in the 2010-11 school year (almost 60 percent of all districts in the state).
Like any large city, Cincinnati faces challenges in educating youth living in poverty. A rash of hacking statements of late, made by adults, makes me wonder who among our edu-cators and -crats need a refresher course in critical thinking skills.
Weighted student funding, anyone?
In partnership with the independent education journal Catalyst Ohio (see here), we resolved to find out, and enlisted the expert help of the nonpartisan FDR Group (see here), a respected survey research firm led by veteran public opinion analysts Steve Farkas and Ann Duffett. The result is Checked Out: Ohioans' Views on Education 2009. This is the third such survey that we at Fordham have undertaken since 2005 on education issues in the Buckeye State. This makes it possible to track some key trends in public opinion over time.
The second edition of Fwd: Arresting Insights in Education summarizes Ohio state report card data for Dayton's district and charter public schools. Despite some recent gains, the phrase academic emergency continues to characterize the majority of Dayton's public schools. Also, youngsters in Dayton's charter schools outperformed their district peers on the 4th and 6th grade proficiency tests -- a finding that flies in the face of recent assertions that charter school students are learning less.
This morning the NAEP Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) results for Mathematics and Reading were released. The TUDA results look specifically at 21 large urban school districts that volunteered to have their NAEP scores reported separately (three of which participated for the first time; see the complete rundown of cities here).

White Hat Management, a major for-profit charter school operator, is fighting for its life. At least that?s the story told in a recent memo by founder David Brennan. Brennan told employees of White Hat that his family has committed over $50 million to sustaining White Hat, but that they simply cannot afford to do so anymore. Their financial commitment will only see the company through 2013. Brennan?s memo also pointed out that White Hat has not made a forecast for the bank in the last 5 years, and in order to start to turn things around they must produce in excess of $2 million every year.
