Today, the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and the Thomas B. Fordham Institute honored Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted with the 2024 Champion for Charter Schools Award. This annual award honors bipartisan state policymakers who are making an exceptional difference for charter school families and communities in their state and who go above and beyond to shape students’ futures for the better.
“Educational freedom is an American aspiration. No school can serve the unique needs of every child, and no child should have the educational options limited by their zip code or financial circumstances,” said Lt. Governor Jon Husted. “I am honored to receive this award, and I will never stop fighting for families to have the ability to choose where they educate their children.”
“Lt. Governor Husted has championed charter schools for more than two decades,” said Chad L. Aldis, Vice President for Ohio Policy at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute. “He’s been an unwavering voice for empowering families with high-quality public-school options. During the last state budget, the DeWine/Husted administration led the way by championing a $3,000 per pupil funding stream for low-income students attending high quality public charter schools. This historic investment will further strengthen Ohio’s charter schools, so that they can effectively serve students for generations to come.”
“It is imperative for lawmakers at all levels of government to support policies to create and sustain high-quality charter schools if they want to make a difference for students and the future of our country. The National Alliance is grateful for the ways Lt. Governor Husted and this year’s other charter champions have been responsive to the students and families they serve by promoting more public school options, robust flexibility and accountability for those options, and increased funding and resources for these unique public schools. Without Lt. Governor Husted’s support, Ohio’s charter school movement would not be where it is today. He has fought for our students and deserves our gratitude and praise,” said Todd Ziebarth, Senior Vice President for Advocacy and State Support at the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools.
